Her Universe returned on Thursday night with their Third Annual Her Universe Fashion Show! Once again, 27 designers beat out all the other entrants for the chance to show their geek inspired work at San Diego Comic Con and have the chance to co-design a collection with Ashley Eckstein for Hot Topic. The twist this year? There are going to be three winners: Judge’s Choice, Audience’s Choice, and the final will be voted on by those watching the reality show!
As always, the show started out with a runway of some of Her Universe’s current and forthcoming designs. There were no sneak peaks of anything Star Wars but it looks like there’s an adorable Star Trek collection coming to ThinkGeek and a Marvel one coming to Hot Topic. You can see some of the models below. There are also new Studio Ghibli designs coming and, interestingly enough, shirts for Electra Woman and Dyna Girl. That Peggy Carter dress is going to sell out in a heartbeat to have your credit cards ready. Oh! And the word on Twitter is that the Finn jacket and the Rey cardigan will make their way back to stores in the fall so we’ll all get another chance to buy them if we missed out the first time. Check out Galactic Fashion’s Instagram for a closer look at the model sketches for what walked the runway.

Ashley’s wardrobe for the occasion did not disappoint. She only had one dress this year but it was an Ahsoka Tano dress made of LEGOs. Just let that soak in for a minute.
Want to see my LEGO dress up close? Come to the @entertainmentweekly Con-X stage TODAY at 4:30 at the Embarcadero where @nathansawaya @andrewmaclaine and I will be doing an interview about this dress! Plus I will be signing Ahsoka autographs afterwards! Hope to see you there! #sdcc (📸 by @kelseyedwardsphoto )

As for the contest itself, it was an interesting mix of designs this year. People certainly seemed to have learned from the previous shows and emphasized the theatrical: transforming gowns and LED lights were definitely present. This was also apparently the year of Harry Potter. You can see pictures of all of the designs over at PopSugar. My favorites are probably the Captain Phasma and the Mad Max dresses. A returning designer put forth a Neverending Story gown which was, once again, a showstopper.
Camille Falciola won the Audience Choice with her “I Solemnly Swear that I am Up to Couture!” and Hannah Kent won the Judge’s Choice with her “Oh What a Gown… What a Lovely Gown!”
You’ll get to see their collection at Hot Topic in May of next year.
Have any favorites from the show? Dying to get your hands on any of the teased Her Universe looks? Is the designer in you itching to start working on your own design?
Her Universe returned on Thursday night with their Second Annual Her Universe Fashion Show! Once again, 25 designers beat out all the other entrants for the chance to show their geek inspired work at San Diego Comic Con and have the chance to co-design a collection with Ashley Eckstein for Hot Topic.
The show kicked off with a mini show of Her Universe’s new pieces that were debuted at SDCC along with some of those previously released at Star Wars Celebration and the Marvel collection for Hot Topic designed by the winners of last year’s show. All of the new SDCC pieces, including shirts featuring Thor and Agent Carter, are available for purchase online as well as at the convention. Perhaps the biggest piece of news from the evening is that Her Universe is getting a reality show. Well, the now annual fashion show is getting a reality show. Her Universe will be partnering with Lionsgate to produce an On Demand show that will follow next year’s designer contestant as they create their looks for the runway.
Everyone was there though for the main event: the fashion show! There were a ton of great looks but my absolutely favorite had to be the Alien Queen dress by Jesse Thaxton.
Actually, I just have to include pictures of more of my favorites!
To wrap things up, Her Universe debuted looks from their brand new Studio Ghibli/Spirited Away collection on the runway while the votes were tallied. (Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find any really good pictures of the new pieces but they’ll be available at Hot Topic in August.) Plus, Ashley came out in her final look for the evening. (What: you thought she’d wear only one dress?) All three looks were designed by one of last year’s winners, Andrew MacLaine.
The Joker dress by Kelly Cercone won Judge’s Choice while Letaal Platt’s cool Sailor Moon transformation dress won audience’s choice.
Congratulations to the winners and I’m sure we all look forward to next year’s show!
The Santa Claus of Fashion must have visited early this year because Geek Couture is coming to San Diego Comic Con this year! Her Universe, Hot Topic, and Nerdist Industries are all teaming up to put together the very first geek fashion show. From the press release on Monday:
Fashion Week is coming to Comic-Con International: San Diego (Comic-Con) this year! Her Universe™, the groundbreaking sci-fi fashion apparel line announced today that they have joined forces to bring the first-ever full-scale “Geek Couture” fashion show and design competition,The Her Universe Fashion Show, to Comic-Con 2014 – the premier comic book and popular arts convention in the world. This premiere event is scheduled to take place during the convention, July 24th, at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Diego just a few minutes’ walk from the San Diego Convention Center. Fashion retailer Hot Topic, a Her Universe partner, will be providing two grand prizes for the winning fashion designers – an opportunity to co-design, with Ashley Eckstein, an exclusive Her Universe fashion collection for Hot Topic. In addition, event partner, Nerdist Industries, will produce all video and media distribution of the event.
If that prize doesn’t send a thrill through your geek fashionista self then I don’t know what will. Obviously, this is an incredibly huge opportunity for anyone interested in design, geek or otherwise. Not only that but all of this is just plain cool! Both of us are absolutely psyched that Her Universe is putting this show together and we can’t wait to see all the coverage of the show. We’ve seen so many amazing designs wandering around conventions and while browsing tumblr so we are eagerly anticipating the undoubtedly gorgeous geek couture outfits that will walk the runway.
You have until April 4th to submit your designs for consideration and you’re allowed to submit up to three although only one will be able to walk the runway. 30 finalists will be chosen to show in San Diego. Be sure to check out the submission page and the press release for the fine print details. Ashley also included some super fabulous geek couture designs with the press release to get your creative and designing juices flowing.
Good luck to everyone who enters and, in the eternal words of Tim Gunn, make it work!
