[COS] Dressing Up the New Republic – Star Wars

September 21, 2015
by Bria

What’s a costumer to do when she’s done with her costumes over a week and a half early, has a relatively light costume schedule, and has a free Saturday?  Do a build in under 10 hours obviously.

To be fair, I had been thinking my way through the construction of this costume for a while now simply because I thought it would be fun.  The jacket and the grey belt took about six hours of work and I’m pretty happy with how they look!  The only thing I would change would be to go back and figure out a way to build the red stripe into the fabric instead of top stitching it on.  Oh, and include a rank insignia.

I’ll be honest: the other reason I made and wore this was because it felt so wrong NOT to bring a Winter costume to the convention… and yes I did flip through my X-Wing omnibuses to make sure that it was canon that she wore this!

[COS] Capable Ladies of Star Wars – Winter Retrac

September 9, 2014
by Bria

My love for Winter Celchu is preeeeeeetty well documented at this point.  It’s so well documented that I basically make every costume I can for her so when Nic and I stumbled across this one glorious panel from Star Wars: Agent of the Empire, we knew there was only one thing to be done: make the corresponding costumes.

Have you ever seen such glorious bitch face like Leia’s in this panel? HAVE YOU?

So obviously we did this grabbed an Imperial Officer/the closest thing to a Jahan Cross we could find and did this:

Of course, once we decided to do the costumes, we just had to recruit some of our friends to join us for a mini photoshoot as some of the Capable Ladies of Star Wars!  Enter Iella and Mirax!  (Who I sincerely appreciate for letting me rope them into an early Sunday morning photoshoot.  Early for Dragon Con at least.)

(If the nice Imperial Officer or the Mara Jade come across this post, comment and I’ll happily edit in credit!)

Honestly, I just love any chance I get to cosplay as one of my favorite Expanded Universe characters and I especially love it when we get more Expanded Universe characters together.  Sadly, with the exception of a handful, these AMAZING characters don’t get enough love when it comes to costuming and I always want to try and encourage more people to do so whenever possible.  They may be Legend(ary) now but that doesn’t mean people shouldn’t still dress up as them and show how cool they are!   Just wait: I may end up starting the Independent League of Expanded Universe Costumers that I joked about being a member of on the Advanced Costuming Panel at Dragon Con.

We have absolutely zero apologies for this picture which was our attempt at recreating that scene from Star Wars: Union.  You know… the comic all about Luke and Mara getting married.  (Yes, Winter wasn’t in this precise panel but we improvised!)

Vadering is still a thing, right?  Or rather… Lady Vader/Mal’ary’ush-ing!

[COS] Living Recording Rod – Star Wars – Winter

April 17, 2013
by Bria

Scoundrels_Winter01

If ever there was a costume that was a surprisingly enjoyable labour of love, it would be this one.  The minute I saw the cover art for Star Wars: Scoundrels, I knew that I absolutely had to do it.  From there, it was a lesson in how to make something “screen accurate” when the artist isn’t working with real materials.  It took a lot of squinting at a so-so res picture combined with a lot of internet searching and some experimentation.  The jacket took a lot of handsewing for the trim and this was my first time using my machine to embroider a pattern.  I’m very happy with the end result though and look forward to wearing this to more conventions.

All pictures were taken in the Gaylord Hotel during Katsucon 2013 by the fabulous Heather of Zhobot.  She did an awesome job working with my injured self for which I am incredibly grateful.  The Leia Organa Solo in the pictures with me is the wonderful Nicole in her awesome new Thrawn Trilogy era costume.

[INSPO] Star Wars: What Would Alderaanians Wear?

February 1, 2013
by Bria

Ever wonder what your favourite Star Wars characters might wear if they dressed in our planet’s high fashion looks?  Yeah, us too.  For this little miniseries, we’ve taken a prominent group in the Star Wars universe and looked through the Pre-Fall 2013 styles to see what those characters might wear.  Next up are the residents of the planet of Alderaan!

Despite being the homeworld of some of the Rebellion’s leaders, Alderaan was a peaceful planet and a beautiful one at that.  (Tarkin is the ACTUAL WORST for blowing it up.)  Unfortunately, we don’t get tons of examples of Alderaanian fashion in the films.  The most we get are Leia’s outfits in A New Hope and Bail Organa (and his staff) and Queen Breha in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.  Their outfits tend to be either fairly structured or more flowing.  (Compare Bail’s Senator jackets with Leia’s Senatorial dress to see what I mean.)  With this and a colour palette of greys, blues, and white in mind, I found a nice range of Pre-Fall looks that could easily appeal to the more stylish Alderaanians if they were on our planet.

We’ll start out with some more casual yet vaguely professional looks.  I hesitate to call some of this business casual, although this is Alderaan we’re talking about so this could potentially fly for them.  Check out these looks from Prabal Gurung, BCBG, and Misha Nonoo.

Temperly London also puts forth a look that could fall into the Alderaanian business casual category, but the use of print makes it stand out from the other looks.  This is something that an Alderaanian who wants to dress more outside the norm, while still looking respectable, might add to their closet:

If nothing else, Alderaanians, just like the Naboo, know how to dress up pretty snazzy when the time comes.  The scarf and soft colours of the first dress by Talbot Runhof could be a definite choice.  Peplums would likely be one trend that would catch on there, especially when combined with lace like in this second Reem Acra dress.  Add in this colour blocked and floral dress by Carolina Herrera and you’ve got a trio of dresses that can likely fit the dressy needs of most Alderaanian ladies.

[WAYW] Perfect Memory Not Included – Winter Celchu

September 25, 2012
by Bria

We interrupt your quasi-regularly scheduled comic book posts to bring you a Star Wars inspired outfit!  I was going through my closet a few weeks ago when I came across this top and it suddenly hit me that it was perfect for a casual Winter Celchu streetwear look.  The look is inspired by an outfit she wore in the Thrawn Trilogy comics.  I actually made a costume version of this that you can see here.

Top: Kenneth Cole
Leggings: Sisley
Shoes: BCBG

And just for fun, I took a picture with my white wig on too!
