[COS] Mara and Mirax’s Excellent Adventure

May 13, 2013
by Bria

Mara and Mirax

Ain’t no party like an Errant Venture party and no one brings it like Mara Jade Skywalker and Mirax Terrik Horn.

I’ve been a fan of the friendship between Mara and Mirax ever since Luke and Corran agreed that the they of them should never meet for fear of trouble.  In the Dark Tide books, there’s a brief exchange about how Mara and Mirax were arrested once but later exonerated.  Clearly they found that trouble.  I’m still waiting for Mike Stackpole to write the short story explaining what exactly they got up to.

Kickass Smuggler Ladies

Doing this shoot was just a fantastic amount of fun and I’m super glad we did it.  We might’ve looked ridiculous at times but as a wise man once said, “You can’t look dignified when you’re having fun!”

Fun piece of trivia: I actually named my car the Errant Venture because it is a red SUV.  I’ll let you guess how many ‘WE’RE TAKING THE ERRANT VENTURE ON A JOY RIDE’ jokes Nic and I made on the drive to the convention.  Spoilers: A lot.

I’d like to take the time to thank the ever wonderful Nic for agreeing to bring her Mirax costume to Katsucon so we could do this little photo project and I’d also thank Heather of House Zhobot, the amazing photographer who captured these ridiculous moments.

All good stories start in a cantina, right? (more…)

[COS] Living Recording Rod – Star Wars – Winter

April 17, 2013
by Bria

Scoundrels_Winter01

If ever there was a costume that was a surprisingly enjoyable labour of love, it would be this one.  The minute I saw the cover art for Star Wars: Scoundrels, I knew that I absolutely had to do it.  From there, it was a lesson in how to make something “screen accurate” when the artist isn’t working with real materials.  It took a lot of squinting at a so-so res picture combined with a lot of internet searching and some experimentation.  The jacket took a lot of handsewing for the trim and this was my first time using my machine to embroider a pattern.  I’m very happy with the end result though and look forward to wearing this to more conventions.

Talking on Coruscant

All pictures were taken in the Gaylord Hotel during Katsucon 2013 by the fabulous Heather of Zhobot.  She did an awesome job working with my injured self for which I am incredibly grateful.  The Leia Organa Solo in the pictures with me is the wonderful Nicole in her awesome new Thrawn Trilogy era costume.

[COS] Double Execution — Psylocke from Uncanny X-Force

April 3, 2013
by White Hot Room

Get Down Take Cover

Betsy Braddock, our girl.  She is and always will be our favourite British model turned superhero badass.  When Lin’s Katsucon costume plans changed and she decided to bring her Psylocke, it was only a matter of time until Bria was roped into doing the same — welcome to double Uncanny X-Force across the sky.

We had a great time shooting with Lionel Lum, who certainly put us through our paces when it came to posing.  All thanks go to him for these great shots!

[COS] On The Wings Of Goodbye — Macross Frontier

March 13, 2013
by Lin

edit-Katsu2013-MacFront-032

Macross Frontier is pretty much all of my hopes and dreams as filtered through this ideal anime future. There is seriously so much I have to say about this series, except it just comes out in sparkly rainbow showers and excited hand waving and the feeling of being utterly magical. Love and justice hard fought and won by giant space robots and pop idol singers? I’m forever on board with this.

There is still not enough heart-shaped gratitude to Abby for taking my hand and singing with me as my galactic fairy. We picked their Valkyrie outfits from the second movie, Sayonara no Tsubasa, because we just can’t pass up the chance to claws down face and cry about sending Alto to battle ha ha ha wear magical girl outfits with outrageous bustles and shared finale medleys.

And, of course, a huge thanks to our photographer, Lionel, for being amazing and just generally as excited as we were. When somebody asks you to step up and this is your stage and there’s the Macross right there sing to save the day ladies, it’s everything the magical girl inside me can do not to burst into rays of joy.

Fashionable Superheroes at Katsucon

February 25, 2013
by Bria

Conventions are always the best, because not only do you get to see your friends and to show off all the hard work that you put into your costumes, but also because you get to see all the amazing costumes that everyone else has been working on!  The only thing more fabulous than a perfectly done costume is a costume with a brand new spin on it.  Last weekend, we ran into some costumers who put a more fashionable spin on their looks.  Check out these super cute and super fabulous Hawkeye & Mockingbird (cosplays by Revivi and ScruffyHawkeye) and Harley Quinn costumers below!

To get a peak at some of the other amazing costumes that were at Katsucon, you can check out the Katsucon Cosplay Round Up by Bria at Tosche Station.
