Rey was one of the best parts of The Force Awakens and her three knob hairstyle has become instantly iconic. Me being me, I a) regretted somewhat recently cutting most of my hair off and b) immediately tried to see if I could get her hairstyle to work. What I figured out isn’t an exact replica but it is easier to do than the actual style and it actually holds up really well in the gym. I can honestly say that I’ve worn this style at least five times to the gym and it’s lasted through an hour of cardio. And hey! Why shouldn’t we get to be geeky while working out? Another benefit is that I’ve found that this hairstyle will hold up decently well regardless of whether you style your hair while it’s wet or dry.
All you need for this style are four things: 3 hair ties and a clip.
Step 1: Brush your hair out and start to gather the top part like you’re doing a half ponytail. Gather less than you usually would so there’s about an inch of hair above your ears that you’re not gathering.
Step 2: Pull the gathered hair through the ponytail holder twice. On the third pull, only pull it through a tiny bit– just enough to form a small loop that’ll be about an inch wide. Leave it like this.
Step 3: Pull hair from the sides and back again. We’re repeating exactly what we did above. Try to make these top two knobs smaller than you think they need to be so you’ll have more hair left for the bottom. It’s up to you how much of the hair left from the first knob you want to put into the second one. Any that you don’t use will just go under and can be used in the final one.
Step 4: Make the second knob by pulling the hair through the elastic twice and leaving a loop the third time. Again, this will be exactly what you did for the first loop.
Step 5: Now you’ll want to gather any hair that you have left. If you can, try to pull from the sides and the bottom and go over the hair that was a part of the top two knobs so that it won’t stick out.
Step 6: Pull the hair through the elastic twice. Now you’re going to make the third knob but this should be more of a longer loop that hangs down. Pull your hair through as much as you can without any layers sticking out.
Step 7: You’ll be left with some ends. Tuck what you can under the hair between the middle and bottom knobs and clip it place if you’re working out. You can also take the hair and wrap it around the elastic to hide it and then bobby pin that hair in place. I don’t recommend this for working out as the bobby pins went flying when I tried.
And that’s it! You now have awesome Rey hair and can take on the First Order! Don’t worry if this takes a little bit of trial and error. I almost always have to redo at least one of the knobs when I’m putting my hair up but it’s a fairly fast, easy, and cute way to style your hair! Plus, because the first knob starts relatively high up, you won’t have to worry about quite as many fly-aways in your face. Experiment with this style and see what works for you!

The Hobbit Part 2 is out in theatres everywhere today, huzzah! To wrap up our week of Middle Earth Celebrations, we’ve got a brand new hair tutorial for you, this time featuring everyone’s favorite blonde elf prince; Legolas!
I’ve been doing a simplified version of this hairstyle since I was 12 and was torn between wanting to be as cool as him and totally crushing on him. (Oh come on, ladies: like at least half of you weren’t there too.)
What You’ll Need: A brush and four skinny hair elastics
Step 1: Brush out your hair and pull it back into a half pony tail, leaving about an inch of hair on either side right about your ears.
Step 2: Take the hair left out above your ear on one side and begin French braiding it back around your ear.
Step 3: Once you’ve braided back and part of the way around your ear, just do a simple braid for the rest.
Step 4: Rinse and repeat for the other side.
Step 5: Move the bottom part of your hair out of the way. Take the half ponytail and split into two even sections.
Step 6: Fishtail braid until you are about halfway down. If you’re unfamiliar with fishtail braiding, there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube that should help you out but the basic idea is that you take a very small section of hair from the bottom of one half and bring it up and around and have it join the other half and just repeat this back and forth.
And that’s all there is to it!
As always, feel free to ask us any questions or tweet us/tag us on tumblr if you try out the hairstyle for yourself!
They could easily rename Game of Thrones to Game of Hair. So many of the women on that show have such glorious long hair and fabulous hairstyles so it’s only natural to want to look to them for inspiration.
Today’s tutorial is inspired by the hairstyle that Daenery’s Targaryen wore for the majority of Season Three. A friend of mine who is also the model in these pictures needed a braided hairstyle to go along with one of her costumes and this seemed perfect for the job. You might recognize her as Heather of Zhobot. ;)
(The easiest way to make your hair look more like Dany’s, you’ll want to do a Dutch braid which means you braid under instead of braiding over. And to have pretty thick hair.)
You don’t need much to do this hair style: just two elastics, a brush, possibly a comb, and some bobby pins to help you divide out the sections
And that’s it! This is definitely one of those hairstyles that takes a bit of practice and that you will probably find a way to modify or tweak it depending upon your hair. Again, if you’d like to make this more like Dany, braid under instead of over, don’t braid down the top sections, and don’t combine the two sections. However, she does change up how she wears the style from time to time so feel free to play!
As always, if you have any questions or want to share pictures of your own attempts at the style, feel free to comment or poke us via social media!
It’s still summer which means that those of us with long hair are probably still looking for more creative ways to get our hair up and off of our shoulders. The leading ladies of Star Wars with their very long hair certainly have plenty of different hairstyles to choose from so today, we’ll look to Padmé Amidala, Queen of Naboo, for inspiration!
While Padmé certainly has a heck of a lot more hair than most of us along with hairstyles that (let’s face it) probably utilize a lot of fake hair, she does have a few styles that can be adapted. Such a hairstyle is the one that Padmé and her handmaidens Rabé and Eirtaé wear during the Battle of Naboo in what is referred to as their ‘Battlemaiden’ outfits.
You definitely need to have long hair for this hairstyle but the good news is that you don’t need much in the way of extras to pull it off: just a brush, two hair-ties, bobby pins, and hairspray.
Step 1: Brush your hair out and put it into a low-to-mid ponytail. Only twist the elastic twice though because you’re going to need that final twist in a minute. I just went ahead with the ponytail here so you could see.
Step 2: Pull out a small lock of hair and put it to the side for now. I found that looping it forward over my ear kept it out of the way.
Step 3: Twist the elastic one final time and pull your hair about halfway through so you’ve got a loop at the top and the rest of your hair is still hanging free beneath it.
Step 4: Take another elastic and loop it around the first elastic and your hair. Then pull the rest of your hair through and create a second loop at the bottom.
Bobby pin the loose ends underneath so they aren’t flying free and escaping.
Step 5: Take that lock of hair we put aside (or over your ear) earlier and wrap it around the elastics to hide them and then bobby pin the tail beneath to hide it.
Step 6: Hair spray it. A lot. Especially the bottom part. Then bobby pin the rest of the flyaways/escapees as necessary.
At the end, your hair should look something like this! (Apologies that mine looks somewhat crooked. Photographing the back of your head can be tricky.)
And that’s it! You now have fabulous Battlemaiden Hair and are ready to take on the armies of the Trade Federation! In all honesty, this hairstyle is a little trickier than the previous two I’ve posted tutorials for. I’m actually still working on completely perfecting it myself so don’t worry if it takes you a little time to make it work. As always, you can tweak the tutorial to make it work best for you. You can check out our previous two Princess Leia hair tutorials and as always, feel free to share with us your pictures of these hairstyles.
Summer is here and if you have long hair like me, that means you might be looking for a more creative way than a ponytail or messy bun to get it all up and off your shoulders. Who better to turn to for ideas than Leia Organa and Padme Amidala? While their hairdos are intended for people with far more hair than most of us, they serve as great starting points and inspiration. The other week, we looked at Leia’s Endor hair style. Today, we’re going to break down how to modify her Bespin hairstyle from Empire Strikes Back for yourself.
(Basically, we still have Star Wars Weekends envy.)
This isn’t a project that you need much for: just a hair brush, a regular hair band, two small hair bands, bobby pins, and a hairnet. Hairspray is optional. (more…)
