So a very long time ago, Abby made me watch Avatar: The Last Airbender. It went only sort of well because Abby also decided to start the show when I was already half asleep but I liked what I remembered of it. Essentially ever since then, we’ve been trying to find a time to cosplay as Mai and Ty Lee because they are basically us in a nutshell. Several years ago, we ended up doing their beach outfits at Dragon Con but have always wanted to do the costumes properly. The problem always came down to how Mai’s a great winter con costume and Ty Lee’s a great summer con costume and we always dragged our feet on picking a con where one of us would be miserable.
And then the Fire Nation attacked. Actually no wait: the stars aligned. My friend Tini Howard was cleaning out her cosplay closet, sold me her Mai costume, and Abby basically went “JUST TELL ME WHAT CON” as soon as I told her I’d bought it. AND THEN THE STARS ALIGNED EVEN FURTHER because Katsu this year was actually reasonably warm so Abby didn’t freeze. What I’m saying is that this was meant to be.
Ty Lee: Abby Rou Cosplay
Thank you to my amazing British Clone Anna for the photography at Katsucon!
In case you thought I was kidding about Mai and Ty Lee basically being us, there was very little acting involved in these pictures.
We may have just gotten HerUniverse.com back but they’re already having a Spring Cleaning Sale! They’ve got a nice selection of Star Wars, Doctor Who, and Marvel pieces available and I pulled out a few of my favorites above. I can attest to how comfy the Imperial LOVE hoodie shirt is as I just bought one for myself a few weeks ago. Everything within the sale is 30% off and the rest of the site is 15% off right now. In other words… it’s a good time to pick up some more Her Universe pieces for a decent price if you’ve been considering it.
We don’t cover men’s fashion very often here at White Hot Room but for some reason, ThinkGeek keeps making us make an exception to the rule. It can be harder for men’s fashion to incorporate geeky nods without being juvenile and ties are no exception. When I’ve shopped for my guy friends in the past, it’s been a struggle to find them a nerdy tie that doesn’t scream HEY LOOK HOW NERDY THIS IS I FOUND IT IN THE KIDS’ SECTION. I’m definitely a fan of how ThinkGeek has approached their ties though. They use a more subtle approach and use a careful hand when incorporating nerdy elements in their ties. I think the new BB-8 one below is absolute perfection. Even the TIE fighters and Death Stars one features a print small enough that someone really would have to look twice to figure it out.
You can shop all of their ties here.
Have you met Lady Carise Sindian yet? If not, you are definitely missing out because that also means you haven’t read Star Wars: Bloodline by Claudia Gray. Bloodline is a Leia-centric book set in the years before The Force Awakens and helps establish the state of the New Republic. Lady Carise Sindian is the Senator from Arkanis and aligns herself with the opposite party as Leia… but also really envies her title and wants one of her own. She’s not a great person but she’s ridiculous, always dresses to the nines, and I love her so basically it was only a matter of time before I asked myself what Lady Carise would wear.
I believe the answer can be found on the runway of an Anne Avantie show. She’s an Indonesian designer and her work is both colorful and incredible and I could absolutely see Carise wearing something like one of these especially the second from the left. (Okay so maybe I really want to wear that one…)
A few months back, Po-Zu announced that they would be creating a line of Star-Wars inspired shoes for fans. This seemed a logical choice given that their Piper Boots were worn by Rey on screen in The Force Awakens. Since the announcement, they’ve been very slowly teasing us with new designs. So far, the collection will include (from the top right and going clockwise) sneakers inspired by Poe Dameron, Poe’s on-screen boots in both brown and black, shoes inspired by Chewbacca, another take on Rey’s on-screen boots, and Finn’s on screen boots in white, black, and metallic bronze. Mostly, these boots are a godsend for cosplayers especially for Poe and Finn. I can also see the Poe sneakers being appealing to the less cosplay-inclined geek. The Chewie boots are just… bizarre. I’m sure there’s a market for them but it certainly doesn’t include me.
We’ve still got a while to go before the collection is available in August. What other characters are you hoping to see shoes for/inspired by? And are any of these on your wish list already?
