Evil(ish) Magical Ballerina Princess? Yup, right up my alley. Seriously, it barely took any arm twisting for me to want to costume as Rue.
I did want to mention a couple of things though. Yes, I was a ballerina. I danced for about 15 years and was a part of a local ballet company until I graduated high school. I also haven’t danced for five years. So while I do have the training and knowledge, my body simply wasn’t in the shape that it used to be and I apologise to my fellow dancers who look at these and can tell that my form is off.
This was absolutely a costume that I was looking forward to making though because a) former ballerina and b) my mother used to be the wardrobe mistress for the aforementioned local ballet company and I’d always wanted to try my hand at decorating a tutu too. That’s a big part of why I didn’t do the typical black costume with a bodice of doom (as seen above) because I wanted to decorate and have fun with it. I made everything for the costume myself. The one exception is the tutu base which I bought from Ebay. (In an ideal world, I’ll one day be able to afford a better and a stiffer tutu base so that this thing actually looks like a proper pancake.) The costume took upward of 40 hours of work as all of the decorations are handsewn. At some point, probably the point where I have the better tutu, I’d like to take another pass at decorating this and probably add some more sequins and other decorations. I was just far too worried about the weight as it was. Overall though, I’m very happy with it!
