Let’s talk superheroes. Or rather, let’s talk seeing the superhero vibe in a high fashion collection. Enter the Zuhair Murad Resort 2016 Collection. There may have been a lot of variety and perhaps not a ton of cohesion amongst the collection as a whole but certain parts of it just screamed runway superhero.
The superhero costume landscape has definitely been changing as of late with the fabulous new designs by artists like Jamie McKelvie, Kris Anka, and Kevin Wada but there are some staples that will never change. We’ll always see the catsuits, the cutouts, the bold colors, and colorblocking that are now supplemented by more interesting shapes and seam-lines.
I mean, somethings will always stay classic. Like lightning bolt motifs.

Finding fun geek jewelry at an affordable price sometimes feels like the search for the Holy Grail especially when you’re looking for something a little more unique than a Batman necklace. I was super psyched to discover Meredith Funk’s Etsy shop FoxyFunk last fall when someone on Twitter shared her Rebel Starbird necklace. Ever since then, I’ve been a huge fan of her store and it’s the first place I check when I want a new geeky necklace. In fact, you’ve probably seen her work as an accessory in one of my Star Wars outfit of the day posts over the last month.
That’s why I’m really excited that she was willing to stop by and chat a little about her store, her process, and geeky things in general!
Bria (White Hot Room): Hi Meredith! Welcome and thanks so much for agreeing to chat with me today! To start us off, how did you first get involved in fandom?
Meredith (FoxyFunk): I had always been a bit of a “nerd”. In high school nerds weren’t quite as cool as they are now. I even arranged my schedule so I could play video games in the middle of my school day. A few years out of high school, I moved to Denver where I met some really amazing wonderful people that introduced me to Conventions! I had finally found what I never knew I was looking for – unconditional acceptance. Ever since then, my inner nerd has flourished and has no signs of stopping!
WHR: When did you first get into crafting/jewelry making?
Meredith: Long ago in my rambunctious youth, I would be dropped off at the mall and left there for hours with my best friend. We would combine our measly chore earnings and join financial powers to buy amazing jewelry making kits at the toy store. At least, we thought they were amazing… It had always just been something I was capable of doing, I had no idea that it would become anything more. (more…)
Otakon comes to Batlimore, MD, this weekend, and Lin will be there living out her anime trash life. Come say hello! And by hello, we mean cry over unfinished 90’s shoujo manga or the stupid Seijou live action cast.
FRIDAY
Morning: we’re setting out as the outer senshi in their super sailor gear!
Afternoon: love that bike anime (and going to try to get to the Yowapeda meet-up!)
Evening: a full dance crew, and it’ll always be after midnight in Shadow Lin’s heart
SATURDAY
Morning: are you Kageyama Tobio? come and volleyball fight me
Afternoon: magical girl transformation with the Cephiro trio!
Evening: another midnight crew, with Ken and Minako in best dressed finery
If you don’t love BB-8, you’re probably not human. Or you haven’t seen either one of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailers in which case what are you doing go watch them right now. BB-8 stole everyone’s hearts as it rolled on through the dirt of Jakku and then peek around the ship’s corridor.
There’s not much as far as official merchandise goes yet but fans have certainly stepped up to do their best to fill the void. In the mean time, we found the pieces below to add a little BB-8 flair to your style!
Crocheted Hat + Necklace + Crop Top
Leggings + Dress + Clutch
Her Universe returned on Thursday night with their Second Annual Her Universe Fashion Show! Once again, 25 designers beat out all the other entrants for the chance to show their geek inspired work at San Diego Comic Con and have the chance to co-design a collection with Ashley Eckstein for Hot Topic.
The show kicked off with a mini show of Her Universe’s new pieces that were debuted at SDCC along with some of those previously released at Star Wars Celebration and the Marvel collection for Hot Topic designed by the winners of last year’s show. All of the new SDCC pieces, including shirts featuring Thor and Agent Carter, are available for purchase online as well as at the convention. Perhaps the biggest piece of news from the evening is that Her Universe is getting a reality show. Well, the now annual fashion show is getting a reality show. Her Universe will be partnering with Lionsgate to produce an On Demand show that will follow next year’s designer contestant as they create their looks for the runway.
Everyone was there though for the main event: the fashion show! There were a ton of great looks but my absolutely favorite had to be the Alien Queen dress by Jesse Thaxton.

Actually, I just have to include pictures of more of my favorites!

To wrap things up, Her Universe debuted looks from their brand new Studio Ghibli/Spirited Away collection on the runway while the votes were tallied. (Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find any really good pictures of the new pieces but they’ll be available at Hot Topic in August.) Plus, Ashley came out in her final look for the evening. (What: you thought she’d wear only one dress?) All three looks were designed by one of last year’s winners, Andrew MacLaine.

The Joker dress by Kelly Cercone won Judge’s Choice while Letaal Platt’s cool Sailor Moon transformation dress won audience’s choice.

Congratulations to the winners and I’m sure we all look forward to next year’s show!
