[INSPO] Fit for a King’s Champion
There are a lot of things we love around here and chief amongst them is ladies kicking some serious ass in armor. And we’re not talking about metal bikinis or ridiculously over emphasized breast plates or inexplicable cut outs. We’re talking about full coverage chain mail and plate armor that actually protects these ladies from getting slashed and skewered. Like Sir Alanna of Trebond and Olau.
For those not in the know, Tamora Pierce’s Tortall books are some of the best young adult books out there and were incredibly influential on me growing up. The first series, Song of the Lioness, follows Alanna who disguises herself as a boy so she can become a knight. (No seriously: you should all go read them.) At one point in the fourth book, there’s a bit of a debate between Alanna, some of her female friends, and a tailor of what exactly Sir Alanna will wear to the formal event at the palace. Alanna prefers typical male attire while others lobby for a dress. In the end, Thayet comes up with a brilliant compromise that perfectly melds the two and leaves everyone satisfied.
Alanna, of course, didn’t have access to the high fashion of our world. If she did though, several of Zuhair Murad’s designs would have likely left her satisfied due to the almost armored look they have. (Thayet would’ve been incredibly pleased.)
We’ll start with this dress from his Fall 2013 show.
This next one from the Spring-Summer 2010 show is armored, militaristic, and it matches her actual armor.
Both of these have the most couture armored look to them of the bunch. If the one on the left were longer, it would likely be Alanna’s undisputed choice from the bunch.
This blue gown is likely the one she would have said no to but it certain would fit.
Just for fun, let’s toss in these two looks from the recent Fall 2014 Ready-to-Wear collection. Perhaps they’re not ready for a palace ball but they do certainly have a more casual everyday knight’s look to them. Sometimes a leather jerkin makes more sense than full plate armor.
We’ll wrap things up with one more armored yet pretty dress. Because that’s how we roll around here.
