Avengers Academy left a heart-shaped imprint on me, not gonna lie, and while I have absolutely zero of Tigra’s sexy feline appeal, I still wanted a sleek look with a bit of edge — taking it up a notch, fashionably speaking.
(Just pretend I have abs or something.)
Of course, this was also an excuse to make grabby hands at a tiger print blazer because I have no concept of decency — further proven by the fact that I have so many things with ears on them. (Whoever nails the provenance of that cat ear cap gets full points to their nerd house of choice…)
Special tip of the hat to Powdered Pretty for that Gold Star “i tried” pin on my cap. It’s totally rad.

Love comic book inspired outfits? So we do! Check out more from our feature What Are You Wearing for our adventures in wardrobing like a superhero.
Ever wonder what your favourite Star Wars characters might wear if they dressed in our planet’s high fashion looks? Yeah, us too. For this little miniseries, we’ve taken a prominent group in the Star Wars universe and looked through the Pre-Fall 2013 styles to see what those characters might wear. Next up is Tenel Ka Djo, Queen Mother of Hapes and Dathomiri Warrior Badass!
The other half of Tenel Ka’s heritage is decidedly quite different from Dathomir. Hapes is a planet where everything is beautiful and court intrigue is the way of life. Therefore, the Hapes Consortium has a much more couture fashion sense than most of the other planets and that’s even before we consider how they might dress here on Earth. They are a culture that values beauty and in turn also place a fair bit of stock in clothing. Let’s be honest: half the royal court probably sings My Strongest Suit in the morning.
We’ll start with this look from BCBG. While I don’t think Hapans are terribly drawn to colours like black, I do think this pants/top combo would definitely fit right in at the Hapan court. It’s sheer and sexy but doesn’t verge into trashy but instead looks expensive.
Flowing is certainly the name of the game here although in a different way than on Alderaan. These looks by Reem Acra and Badgley Mischka have some seriously yardage in their flowing sleeves.
Colour can be just as important as the cut of a look and I could definitely see purple being rather popular in the court especially amongst those related to the royal family. The looks below by Vera Wang, Just Cavalli, and Emilio Pucci certainly offer a wide range of Hapan styles that would also likely reflect different ages and events.
Of course, because this is a Tenel Ka post, we’re going to take a more specific look at what she might wear in the Hapan fashion vein. I already used Matthew Williamson’s Pre Fall collection in the Dathomir post but I just had to use it again here because I felt like that collection (or at least parts of it) really just was Tenel Ka. The prints of the shirt and the turquoise skirt and the purple jacket read as something that she might lean towards especially when she is still reluctant to embrace that side of her heritage. They are much more casual than most of the other looks featured here but are also a shift away from a more Dathomiri style.
Although Tenel Ka clearly acclimates to being Queen Mother as the years go on, she would be somewhat reluctant to fully embrace the extravagant clothing aspect of the role. Both of these dresses by J. Mendel would certainly fit the bill. The copper colour and texture of the left is reminiscent of lizard hide armour while the dark blue is a bit more subdued while still featuring a more Hapan cut.
Of course, even the Hapans have to go more casual sometimes but Hapan Casual is never anything upscale so try these looks by Elie Saab, Cedric Charlier, and Versace on for size.
Of course, I have to play you out with some evening dresses. On the left, we have a form-fitting dress by Prabul Gurung as a contrast to the more flowing dresses from above and on the right we have a two-toned gown by Jonathan Saunders. Bear with me for this next corny line: The colour change represents the two-faced nature of Hapan court lies and manipulations.

Macross Frontier is pretty much all of my hopes and dreams as filtered through this ideal anime future. There is seriously so much I have to say about this series, except it just comes out in sparkly rainbow showers and excited hand waving and the feeling of being utterly magical. Love and justice hard fought and won by giant space robots and pop idol singers? I’m forever on board with this.
There is still not enough heart-shaped gratitude to Abby for taking my hand and singing with me as my galactic fairy. We picked their Valkyrie outfits from the second movie, Sayonara no Tsubasa, because we just can’t pass up the chance to
claws down face and cry about sending Alto to battle ha ha ha wear magical girl outfits with outrageous bustles and shared finale medleys.
And, of course, a huge thanks to our photographer, Lionel, for being amazing and just generally as excited as we were. When somebody asks you to step up and this is your stage and there’s the Macross right there sing to save the day ladies, it’s everything the magical girl inside me can do not to burst into rays of joy.
Want to check out more of Lin’s costumes? Right this way. And keep an eye out, because we’ll have more cosplay madness to show you before this month is over!
No but seriously. If you haven’t heard already, Marvel announced yesterday at their SXSW panel that they are offering 700 first issues or first appearances of digital comics for FREE
until Tuesday. The demand for the comics has actually overwhelmed the servers and so right now, you give them your email address and they will let you know when the promotion kicks back in. But they will still be free. Let us count the ways in which this is fabulous and awesome! Okay, so maybe we won’t count them all but here’s a few in case you need convincing:
- It is a free way to get into comics
- It is a free way to test the waters of new series
- Your digital library can expand drastically
- No but seriously: it’s free comics. What other reason do you need?
Really, you should definitely take advantage of this sale. Also, don’t be discouraged if it takes you a few tries to get the site to load. Comixology’s servers are taking a beating but you’ll get through eventually so be patient and be kind to the hard working support staff. ;)
Free Comics, folks. Why are you still reading this?
You’ve probably already heard about Hunger Games: Catching Fire’s latest marketing campaign but it certainly deserves some more recognition and chatter! Last week they used Capitol Couture, a fictional in-universe fashion site, to debut new character posters after teasing them on Instagram with a hashtagged clue. Each poster (with one exception) features either a Victor of the Hunger Games or a prominent member of the Capitol dressed in some rather dapper and fabulous looks by costume designer Trish Summerville. (And if you look closely, you can even play spot the Alexander McQueen…) Seriously, how amazing is Katniss’s dress especially once you see the Mockingjay worked into the design?
Each poster has been exclusively revealed by a different media outlet but you can check out all of the revealed posters over on the official Hunger Games Facebook page.
